Next Step Central: Our Home

Next Step moved into a new home in the Central Square neighborhood of Cambridge, MA in the Spring of 2014. At Next Step Central, as we like to call it, we offer year-round free programming in a safe non-clinical private space that is wheelchair accessible and only a few steps away from public transportation. This means more fun and more interaction with our teen and young adult participants! At Next Step Central, young people living with cancer, HIV or a rare genetic disorder can connect with peers who share similar life experiences and have fun while learning from each other.

At Next Step Central we have a state-of-the-art music recording studio where seriously ill teens and young adults can write, record and produce their own music with our music therapist, Kimberly Khare. This therapeutic process allows them a chance to better understand their illness and cope with how it has impacted their life. Working with Kimberly in our recording studio helps our seriously ill participants to develop their own story in a creative way and create a final product in a professional setting that makes them proud.

One of the many great offerings at Next Step Central is our Media Lab & Expressive Arts Room. In this space, our participants engage in independent or group workshops. This is a safe, yet fun environment for our participants to explore their creative and professional interests. The Media Lab& Expressive Arts Room provides unique opportunities for our participants to use their voice in a variety of ways whether it be through a cover letter when applying for a job or through artistic projects where they can express how they feel about their life with a chronic illness or discuss a different topic that interests them. The Media Lab & Expressive Arts Room is also a place where they can stop by and get support with their homework.

At Next Step we understand the importance of community for those that are often times isolated from their friends because of their chronic illness. Every month, with the help of our participants, we come up with fun events that bring participants together in an environment that offers them an opportunity to connect with peers who truly know what it's like to be living with HIV, cancer or a rare genetic disorder. Our community programs provide opportunities for our participants to come together to learn new life skills as well as develop new friendships and build on their personal identities outside of their illness. At each of these events we try to accomplish these objectives but we also realize that young people sometimes just want to have a good time with their peers, which leads to such events as an afternoon of bowling or a night of trivia here at Next Step Central.
