Sarah Garrity, mom of three from Milton MA, and her husband Bill are co-chairs of our annual spring fundraiser, and Sarah has run the Falmouth Road Race to raise funds for Next Step the last two years in a row. We recently caught up with Sarah and asked why Next Step is on her shortlist of causes she supports.
"I had been searching for a charity that I could "connect" with for quite some time and was not interested in working with some of the larger ones. I really wanted to make a tangible difference.
My husband Bill knew Bill Kubicek for quite some time and he offered to sponsor the annual Next Step fundraiser. I began to get involved with the planning and really enjoyed working with all of the Next Step staff. They are so committed to their work and they were welcoming and made me feel at home. After attending my first Next Step fundraiser, I was hooked. The excitement and feeling of making a true difference to so many people out there with cancer and other serious illnesses was palpable. We heard testimonials during the event from several individuals who had attended Next Step programs and how this truly changed their lives for the better.
Finding time to work with Next Step is a priority for me. I've chosen several different areas to donate my time and energy and Next Step is at the top of the list. It's very rewarding to see what a difference you can make with not very much time. Being involved with Next Step not only helps me to feel better about giving back but it also makes my children aware of how important it is to give your time to something you believe in and that helps other people."
