Aritist’s Story: “Last Chance” is a song written by an 18-year old cancer patient during the final weeks of her treatment for a brain tumor. Entering treatment and fighting for her life, she quickly learned the difficult life lessons of love and true friendship. Her boyfriend of many years, who had asked her to marry him that summer, cut off all contact immediately upon her diagnosis. This young woman is a writer, and journaling was her outlet for her pain, loss, grief, and fear. She is also musical, and during treatment worked with the hospital’s music therapist who in turn brought in Song Studio to support this young woman in fully realizing her potential and healing through song-writing. This song was written, recorded and produced in 3 sessions, the 3rd and last session taking place during her final chemotherapy – which she was dreading – and created an environment of celebration and empowerment despite the side effects of nausea and extreme fatigue. “You thought I’d wait around for you – Boy, you thought wrong – I can play your games too – Since you left, I’ve become strong…”
Lyrics:
VERSE 1
The day you left you took everything
It was the day my life fell apart
After all we went through, and a ring
You so easily ran away
for a new start
PRE-CHORUS
One day you will realize
You are the one missing out
Believe me when that day comes
There will be no doubt
CHORUS
I’ll turn to you and let you know
Baby, you had your chances
This time I’m walking away
You better take your last glances
VERSE 2
You thought I’d wait around for you
Boy, you thought wrong
I can play your games too
Since you left I’ve become strong
PRE-CHORUS
One day you will realize
You are the one missing out
Believe me when that day comes
There is no doubt
CHORUS
I’ll turn to you and let you know
Baby you had your chances
This time I’m walking away
You better take your last glances
BRIDGE
Did you really love me?
I finally realized
I never meant anything to you
Just another prize
To show off to all your friends
And now you won’t even look me in the eyes
PRE-CHORUS
I hope one day you realize
You’ve missed out
And when that day comes
I have no doubt
CHORUS
That I’m prepared to walk away
So take one last glance
Goodbye is all I have left to say
Because you’ve already ruined your last chance
Your last chance
Your last chance
