Over the next several weeks we will be sharing personal stories from our amazing runners so you can get to know them a little better and learn why they are running for Next Step. Meet Peg Carlson, eleven-time Team Next Step runner!

“After my daughter, Emily, aged out of The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, we searched for over a year trying to find a program that was a good fit and age appropriate. There was none, until we found Next Step. Our search finally ended! It was the sense of community, belonging, and understanding at Next Step that resonated most with me. We have been part of the Next Step family since the start.

Entering adulthood can be difficult under the best circumstances. Add a serious illness, and it can be devastatingly hard. There is such a strong sense of being alone and isolated. A community where teens and young adults battling a serious illness can come together to find companionship, share stories, coping mechanisms and resources is vital. Bill and his staff at Next Step understands this.

Next Step welcomes its participants with open, caring and understanding arms. They offer a community, and so much more. Next Step gives seriously ill young people a voice and makes them realize they are not alone and anything is possible. Those who knew Em and her story witnessed the incredible positive changes in her after she joined the Next Step family. Being involved in Next Step lit a spark in her and she flourished! That is why I am running for Next Step!

I’m going to miss running from Woods Hole to Falmouth, but I’ve already mapped out the 7 miles that I’m going to be running. This year’s 2020 Falmouth Road Race: At-Home Edition is my first virtual race, but my 11th time running Falmouth! This year, I’ll be running it with my son and fellow Next Step runner, Andrew!” – Peg

In the times we are living, our virtual programming has never been more critical to our young people. Please donate today and help Team Next Step hit their fundraising goal of $42,000 in support of Next Step’s free community, music and mentorship programs. Together we can change the lives of more young people living with cancer, HIV and rare genetic disorders.
