“What am I going to be when I grow up?” Every child dreams or frets over this question, which gets more and more daunting as they grow into their teens and early twenties. Their number one job becomes building their identity and starting the journey toward their future. It is a time of excitement and uncertainty, mistakes and successes, joy and pain… now imagine this journey having to take a back seat to a battle with cancer, sickle cell anemia, HIV or some other serious illness.
Focusing on keeping your meds down, getting to your doctor appointments, explaining your illness to your friends or teachers or bosses; these daily challenges can become consuming and block out everything else. Opportunity can feel nowhere in sight – just survival – front and center. Forget about imagining a path forward.
This is where Next Step comes in. We combine community, music and mentorship programming to create opportunity for teens and young adults living with serious illness. This three-pronged approach helps young people to set goals, prepare, and take a chance on themselves. If they succeed, we celebrate like crazy, and if they come up short, well, we help them to get up, dust off, and try again.
The accomplishments of Next Step’s young people continue to inspire. Some have sung their first song in public, lead their first workshop, gone on their first date, interviewed for their first job, become national advocates, and so much more. Simply put, we help these deserving young people move beyond the battle to survive towards becoming engaged members of your communities.
